Under the new guidance, hosts may only set seven standard rules, and any additional requests must remain 'reasonable' – no sweating over dishes or stripping mattresses. The change takes effect for all reservations booked from 20 November onward.
"House rules help guests understand what hosts expect, but we’ve heard they can also be confusing and onerous," said Airbnb spokesperson, adding the simplification aims to avoid surprises.
Hosts will still retain control of their rules, though fines are no longer permitted. Non‑compliant requests trigger a flag and hosts can appeal.
The revision follows growing complaints about guests being asked to perform cleaning duties despite already paying a cleaning fee. Viral TikTok clips of hosts reviewing vacated properties have highlighted the issue.
Airbnb indicated it might allow exceptions in particular circumstances, such as water‑saving measures during droughts. Still, stripping beds and dish‑washing remain disallowed.
Guests will now see host rules more prominently, including in reservation reminders, while contracts are restricted to cases required by law or association rules.
Airbnb wishes to keep the platform appealing for both hosts and travellers, finding a middle ground that respects both parties’ expectations.
