A shocking incident unfolded outside a nightclub in Los Angeles when a car slammed into a crowd of patrons waiting to enter the Vermont Hollywood music venue. The attack occurred at approximately 2 AM local time on Saturday, leaving a total of 30 people injured, including seven in critical condition and six suffering serious injuries, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD).
Initial investigations by the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) suggest the crash was intentional, as witnesses reported the driver made a U-turn before barreling into the congregation of mostly women at the venue. Eyewitness accounts confirmed that bystanders intervened violently, pulling the driver from the vehicle, a Nissan Versa, and physically assaulting him. Reports state one bystander even discharged a firearm at the driver, who was subsequently transported to a local hospital for surgery, although details about his condition remain unknown.
The chaos continued as the vehicle also crashed through a nearby taco stand and valet podium, causing considerable pandemonium at the scene. Images captured from the aftermath reveal debris scattered across the pavement and a significant presence of law enforcement officials.
At the time of the incident, the nightclub was hosting a reggae and hip-hop event, which has heightened the shock of the incident. A law enforcement official informed CNN that the driver might have been under the influence of alcohol during the crash.
The LAPD is also on the hunt for an unidentified suspect who reportedly fired a gun during the incident and fled the scene. This shooter is described as a bald Hispanic man wearing a blue jersey and potentially armed with a silver-colored revolver.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass expressed her sorrow over the tragedy, describing it as a "heartbreaking incident" and reassured the public that a thorough investigation would follow. Captain Adam VanGerpen of LAFD echoed the sentiment of chaos at the scene, commending the bravery of bystanders who rushed to the aid of those injured.
