Three police officers were killed and two others critically injured in a shooting in the US state of Pennsylvania, while following-up on a 'domestic-related' investigation, authorities have said.
Pennsylvania State Police Commissioner Colonel Christopher Paris stated the gunman was fatally shot by the police.
The incident occurred just after 14:00 local time (18:00 GMT), with images from the scene showing a police officer airlifted by medical helicopter.
This tragic event prompted a nearby school district in Spring Grove, a small town of approximately 2,500 residents, to briefly shelter in place, although the district confirmed the school itself was not directly affected.
Officials indicated that there was no active threat to the public during or after the incident.
The shooting took place in a rural area of York County in North Codorus Township, located about 100 miles west of Philadelphia.
Authorities have disclosed minimal details as the investigation is ongoing.
Governor Josh Shapiro visited the area on Wednesday afternoon to meet with the families of the slain officers, highlighting the deep loss felt across the community. We grieve for the loss of life of three precious souls who served this county, served this commonwealth, served this country, he commented.
In response to the incident, Governor Shapiro ordered all state flags to be lowered to half-mast in homage to the officers, with a promise that flags would be lowered at all public buildings across the state.
The FBI is providing support to local and state law enforcement agencies during this challenging time, with Director Kash Patel expressing condolences and prayers for the officers, their families, and the York County community.
