Romania is grappling with significant revelations surrounding its presidential elections, with authorities pointing to a well-orchestrated campaign aimed at influencing voter perceptions using TikTok alongside a series of cyber-attacks. The country's domestic intelligence agency claims that this disruption appears to be orchestrated by a state-sponsored entity.
Calin Georgescu, a far-right candidate known for his admiration of Vladimir Putin, has surged to prominence following the initial voting round. Until recently, he was relatively unknown within Romania, experiencing a sudden spike in support that intelligence reports attribute to a "highly organised" social media blitz, utilizing influencers to convey uniform messages. Authorities believe that the campaign was executed from "external locations," thereby circumventing scrutiny.
Declassified documents made public by outgoing President Klaus Iohannis reveal that Georgescu's campaign benefitted from paid social media promotions that did not adhere to electoral laws, with a TikTok account allegedly spending $381,000 in a single month to amplify his message. Georgescu has claimed throughout the campaign that he avoided spending any money on promotions and dismissed the intelligence findings as a conspiracy to thwart his candidacy.
In addition to the electoral manipulation claims, the documents disclose serious cyber-security breaches, including the theft of access credentials for electoral websites, which were subsequently exposed on cyber-crime platforms attributed to Russia. An estimated 85,000 hacking attempts aimed at electoral systems were reported, identified as typical of state-sponsored activities.
The implications of such findings are heightened with the impending second round of voting, where Georgescu is set to compete against reformist candidate Elena Lasconi. Romanian Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu, who finished third in the elections, has expressed his endorsement for Lasconi and called for accountability based on the newly released intelligence. He stressed that the electorate desires Romania's continued alignment with European development policies.
Meanwhile, a protest advocating pro-EU values is planned, coinciding with the heated political atmosphere. Georgescu, cautioning against potential unrest reminiscent of the 2014 Ukrainian Maidan protests, urged his supporters to prioritize peaceful social conditions.
As Romania continues its election processes, the focus will remain on uncovering the origins of these cyber threats and validating the integrity of the electoral process amidst accusations of interference.
