In brief
In a historic announcement, sumo wrestling is set to return to London for the first time in over three decades, with the prestigious Grand Sumo Tournament scheduled to run from October 15 to October 20, 2025. This highly anticipated event will take place at the renowned Royal Albert Hall, echoing the excitement of its inaugural tournament held there in 1991, which was the first-ever sumo association event outside Japan.
Nobuyoshi Hakkaku, chairman of the Japan Sumo Association and a champion of the 1991 basho, expressed his enthusiasm for the upcoming competition, anticipating that the audience will be even more spirited than in 1991. “Back in 1991, the spectators were excited to watch sumo,” he remarked during a news conference in London. Hakkaku recalled feeling pressure not only to perform well but also to deliver a speech in English after the tournament, a challenge he found daunting. While sumo has seen other tournaments hosted abroad, including in New York City, none have been sanctioned by the Japan Sumo Association, nor have they featured wrestlers from Japan's top division, which organizes six official events each year. This return to London after such a long interval signals a renewed interest and appreciation for the ancient sport, promising to captivate new and seasoned fans alike. The association and event organizers expect a passionate reception similar to that of 1991, if not even more enthusiastic. Thus, the stage is set for a momentous occasion, as sumo wrestling not only re-establishes its roots in Britain but also showcases the rich cultural heritage and athletic prowess of its competitors.
