South Africa's ambassador to France, Nathi Mthethwa, has been found dead near the four-star Hyatt Regency Hotel in Paris, French officials have reported. Mthethwa, 58, was reported missing by his wife on Monday evening after she received a worrying message from him. It was stated that he had booked a room on the 22nd floor of the hotel, which had a forced-open security window.

The circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear, and an investigation is currently being conducted by the Paris prosecutor's office, which is sending a magistrate to the scene. Mthethwa, a prominent member of the African National Congress, served as South Africa's ambassador to Paris since December 2023. He previously held government positions as police minister and arts and culture minister.

Known for his close association with former President Jacob Zuma, Mthethwa was implicated in investigations regarding high-level corruption during Zuma's presidency. In a statement, South Africa's Foreign Minister Ronald Lamola expressed deep sorrow over Mthethwa's passing, describing him as a distinguished servant of the nation and noting that his loss is felt both nationally and within the international diplomatic community. The investigation into his death is being prioritized by French authorities.
