A Virginia man has been arrested in connection with two pipe bombs placed outside the headquarters of the Republican and Democratic national committees on the eve of the 2021 Capitol riot.
US Attorney General Pam Bondi announced that Brian Cole Jr., 30, was arrested without incident early on Thursday morning. He faces charges related to the use of an explosive device and attempted malicious destruction through explosives.
While officials did not disclose a motive for the placement of the pipe bombs, which were safely deactivated without any detonation, this arrest concludes an extensive investigation. Previously, law enforcement had struggled to identify any suspects despite a reward of $500,000 for information leading to an arrest.
According to FBI officials, there was no new information or tips that led to Cole's arrest. The bombs were placed on January 5, 2021, and discovered only the next afternoon, coinciding with the Capitol riot. At that time, Kamala Harris, who was the Vice President-elect, was evacuated from the DNC headquarters shortly after the devices were found.
Court documents reveal Cole lives with his parents in Woodbridge, about 20 miles outside Washington, D.C., and works for a bail bond company. Investigators discovered evidence that he had purchased components for bomb-making over the past couple of years, including parts from local hardware stores and batteries from retailers.
Mobile phone data indicated that Cole was near the sites of the bombs when they were planted, further complicating the investigation which had drawn on a wealth of data.
FBI officials praised the efforts of agents who persevered through the investigation, noting the significant amount of data processed, including CCTV footage that showed Cole’s movements during the critical timeframe. The investigation delved into multiple sales of bomb components and tracked Cole's vehicle near the site.
The case reflects broader concerns over security and the challenges posed by domestic terrorism, with FBI officials pledging to ensure safety and accountability in the nation's capital.
