ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Sherrone Moore, who was the Michigan football coach for just a brief spell, was arrested and is facing allegations of assault. After being jailed for two nights, Moore was set to be arraigned following an investigation by local authorities.

Moore, 39, was dismissed from his coaching role on Wednesday due to what the university described as an inappropriate relationship with a staff member. Following his termination, he was taken into custody, marking a swift downfall for the coach who had recently signed a five-year contract worth $5.5 million.

According to a statement from Pittsfield Township police, they responded to a call concerning an alleged assault and subsequently detained an individual. Specific details about the incident have not been disclosed by the authorities.

Michigan officials have indicated that credible evidence had been found in connection with Moore’s misconduct, which they classified as a violation of university policy. Athletic director Warde Manuel expressed that Moore's actions were unacceptable, particularly considering that he is a family man with three daughters.

As an interim measure, Biff Poggi has been appointed to lead the team in the upcoming Citrus Bowl game against No. 14 Texas after filling in for Moore during a previous suspension related to a sign-stealing scandal.

The fallout from Moore's departure may extend beyond the program’s leadership as players could consider transferring, and donors may rethink their financial commitments to the storied football program.
