A Venezuelan man, Milenko Faria, shared his ordeal with asylum officials as his wife, Dr. Rubeliz Bolivar, a respected physician in South Texas, was detained at the airport with their 5-year-old daughter. Faria was interviewed at the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services office near Los Angeles while Bolivar faced her sixth day in immigration custody in Texas, missing the asylum appointment they had waited over ten years for.

Dr. Bolivar, known for her contributions to a medically underserved area, was apprehended just before boarding a flight to California where they would finally attend their asylum interview together. This incident has raised concerns about the enforcement of immigration policies that penalize those seeking refuge.

Adding to the distress, Bolivar is the second Venezuelan physician arrested in the region within days, following Dr. Ezequiel Veliz who was taken into custody and later released after securing a bond hearing. Bolivar’s detention highlights the painful realities many immigrants face amid strict immigration regulations.

“She was focused on helping our community, and we have always followed the law when pursuing our residency,” a heartbroken Faria lamented during his interview. He emphasized their efforts to comply with immigration requirements, having begun their journey in 2016 when Bolivar entered on a tourist visa.

The couple hopes to gain legal permanent residency through the asylum application filed by Faria, who has worked as an information systems technician since 2019. Their daughter, a U.S. citizen, was also detained but has since been released to her grandfather's care.

As the immigration environment evolves, many immigrants are finding their paths disrupted by detentions and heightened scrutiny. Dr. Bolivar's case advocates for the need to reassess protections afforded to those seeking asylum as they continue to navigate the difficulties of legal residency in the United States.
