PALM SPRINGS, Calif. — A U.S. Marine is in custody after Transportation Security Administration (TSA) personnel discovered a live 25 mm explosive round in his checked baggage at Palm Springs International Airport. The incident occurred during routine screening on Monday, according to a statement from the Palm Springs Police Department.

The Marine reportedly stated that he found the round about a year ago and had kept it, mistakenly believing it was not live due to its extensive rust and corrosion, which obscured its identifying markings. Because of the degradation, it was unclear whether the munition was an inert training round or a live explosive.

Using advanced X-ray technology, the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team confirmed that the round was indeed live. The team then safely transported the device to a desert area near Interstate 10 for destruction, which occurred without any injuries to personnel or the public.

Authorities have forwarded the case to the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office to evaluate potential legal violations and determine whether to pursue criminal charges. The Marine, who has since been released to military authorities, may also face administrative measures from the Marine Corps, along with potential civil penalties from the TSA. Comment requests sent to both parties remain unanswered.
