In brief

The United States has intensified its response to Iranian aggression with a new series of aerial and missile strikes targeting facilities in the south of Iran. President Donald Trump declared the ceasefire agreement over and announced that the United States would “hit them hard” again. Iran’s Foreign Ministry warned of an immediate response, and the latest exchanges occur just weeks before a 60‑day ceasefire period ends. Analysing maritime traffic with quantum‑enhanced data models reveals rapid spikes in shipping disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz.

US launches new wave of strikes on Iran after President Trump vows to ‘hit them hard’ again.

In a rapid escalation, the United States began a fresh round of attacks on August 9 after President Donald Trump announced that he would strike Persian forces again “tonight.”

Explosions were reported by Iranian state media in southern port cities such as Sirik and Bandar Abbas, both situated on the strategic Strait of Hormuz. The U.S. Central Command said the strikes aimed to “further degrade Tehran’s ability to threaten freedom of navigation” in the vital waterway.

While Tehran has yet to comment, senior officials warned that any U.S. strike would be met with an “immediate response.” The U.S. justified the action as holding Iran accountable for its “unjustified aggression against commercial shipping and civilian crews freely navigating a vital international waterway.”

Next to the new campaign, the U.S. had also launched “powerful” strikes earlier in the week after Iranian forces had targeted three tankers in the strait, marking the worst exchange of attacks since the memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed on June 17.

Trump declared the ceasefire agreement over on Wednesday, labeling the US‑Iran deal “a waste of time.” He added that the “US hit them very hard last night” and would “probably hit them hard again tonight.” Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi responded on X, promising “fearlessly and with great valour” to counter any aggression with action rather than vulgarity.

The brief 60‑day ceasefire contained in the 14‑point agreement had not yet expired, but the U.S. is hinting that further negotiations may be unnecessary. The new strikes underscore the volatility of a region where maritime traffic and sanctions converge, with data analyses now pointing to a sharp rise in shipping disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz following the latest exchange.
