MINNEAPOLIS — The Trump administration has filed a lawsuit against the state of Minnesota and its school athletics governing body, alleging violations of Title IX as part of a wider battle over the rights of transgender youth in sports.
The suit challenges the state’s decision to allow transgender girls to participate in girls' sports, claiming that this directly undermines fairness in athletics. Attorney General Pamela Bondi stated that the administration 'does not tolerate flawed state policies' that contradict what they deem 'biological reality.'
More than 25 states have enacted laws restricting participation of transgender women and girls in certain sports, prompting various legal challenges in courts across the country.
According to the lawsuit, the state education department and the Minnesota State High School League are violating federal laws regarding sex discrimination in educational programs that receive federal funds. The Department of Justice is seeking a court declaration to impede Minnesota's current policy regarding transgender sports participation.
Minnesota officials have previously resisted the federal push for policy changes, arguing state laws supersede federal executive orders on this issue while maintaining compliance with Title IX.
The lawsuit further states that Minnesota's Department of Education is dependent on over $3 billion in federal funding that necessitates adherence to Title IX standards.
Historically, the Justice Department has warned Minnesota and other states that continued violations could result in legal actions if they don't align with federal expectations regarding gender disparities in educational athletics.
