SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — In a significant legal milestone, a jury in New Mexico has determined that Meta Platforms, Inc., the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has violated state laws protecting children, leading to a substantial $375 million penalty. This is the initial verdict in a series of trials focusing on social media companies' responsibilities to safeguard minors on their platforms.
The jury ruled that Meta's platforms have detrimental effects on children's mental health, a concern that echoes nationwide as public awareness of social media's adverse impacts grows. Despite the fine being a relatively small fraction of Meta's projected $201 billion revenue in 2025, this ruling signifies a pivotal change in how courts perceive tech companies’ accountability.
Meta's defenses have claimed a lack of merit in allegations alleging that platforms are designed to be addictive and fail to ensure the safety of minors against exploitation and harmful content. However, the jury sided with prosecutors, who argued that Meta has repeatedly chosen profit over user safety.
New Mexico Attorney General Raúl Torrez, who led the litigation against Meta, indicated that the jury found numerous violations of state consumer protection laws that unfairly exploited children’s vulnerabilities. The five-week trial presented compelling evidence of how minors had experienced sexual solicitations on these platforms, showcasing serious deficiencies in Meta's user safety practices.
