A young boy who was bitten by a shark in Sydney Harbour last week has died in hospital. Twelve-year-old Nico Antic had been jumping off a rock ledge with friends on 18 January when he was attacked by what authorities suspected was a bull shark.

We are heartbroken to share that our son, Nico has passed away, his parents Lorena and Juan said in a statement.

The incident was one of four reported shark attacks along the New South Wales coast over two days.

Nico was described by his family as a happy, friendly, and sporty young boy with a generous spirit. His friends showed great bravery by jumping into the water to assist him following the attack. Despite undergoing surgery and being placed in an induced coma, Nico sustained serious leg injuries and unfortunately did not survive.

An online fundraiser initiated for Nico's family has raised over $240,000 to support them during this tragic time.

Recent weeks have seen a surge in shark attacks along Australia's east coast, with three incidents recorded in Sydney within just 48 hours. Experts suggest that heavy rainfall has contributed to these occurrences by creating murky water conditions preferred by bull sharks.

In response to the attacks, several beaches across Sydney have been closed to ensure public safety, although many are slowly reopening as conditions improve. Community reactions have been haunting and somber as they navigate the spate of shark-related incidents.
