Three people have died after a helicopter crashed off the Hawaiian island of Kauai, police said. The helicopter was carrying one pilot and four passengers, with two survivors taken to a hospital for treatment. Police reported that the helicopter was operated by Airborne Aviation, whose website promotes 'a doors-off thrill seekers adventure tour' showcasing the island's breathtaking scenery.

The US Coast Guard indicated that the helicopter crash-landed about 100 yards off Kalalau beach, and authorities have not yet released the identities of the victims. A police response to the crash was launched around 15:45 local time (01:45 GMT), involving both the coast guard and the fire department.

Kauai's Mayor Derek Kawakami expressed appreciation for the recovery efforts, emphasizing the island community's commitment to supporting anyone who visits. 'Here on Kaua'i, whenever somebody puts their feet on our soil, they are one of ours,' he stated. Andrew Williams, the search and rescue mission coordinator for the coast guard in Honolulu, expressed sorrow over the loss of life, extending thoughts and prayers to the families affected.

Helicopter tours are a popular attraction for visitors to Kauai, a location famously featured in the film 'Jurassic Park.' Airborne Aviation offers a 50-minute tour costing $348 per passenger. The incident raises questions following previous fatal helicopter crashes in Kauai, including a separate accident in July 2024, where turbulence led to fatalities. The National Transportation Safety Board attributed that crash to extreme downdraft conditions causing aircraft instability.
