About 32 bodies, mostly children, have been dug up from a mass grave in the western Kenyan town of Kericho as investigations continue into the shocking discovery.
The exhumation was conducted after police obtained a court order to retrieve 14 bodies that were initially believed to have been buried at the site. Government pathologist Richard Njoroge revealed that the gruesome discovery involved bodies stacked in gunny bags, interrupted by heavy rains during the retrieval process.
A post-mortem examination is set to begin, with pressing calls to identify the bodies and investigate the circumstances of their deaths. Njoroge noted the presence of seven adults and 25 children, including infants and fetuses, with several dismembered body parts also recovered.
Initial findings suggest some bodies might have originated from local hospitals and mortuaries, although a definitive conclusion will be drawn only after autopsies. The condition of the remains indicates the bodies originated from different timeframes, with adults being highly decomposed while the children's remains were less so.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) indicated that 13 unclaimed bodies were released from a hospital in Nyamira county and transported to Kericho for burial last Friday, leading to further questions about the additional bodies.
It remains unclear how these bodies ended up buried in a site associated with the National Council of Churches of Kenya, which has distanced itself from this secret burial, claiming it was conducted without their approval.
Two suspects, a public health officer from Nyamira and a cemetery caretaker, have been arrested in connection with the incident, as the DCI explores the possibility of criminal activities alongside the identified irregularities in the burial process.
This distressing discovery has resonated particularly due to a prior mass grave incident in 2023 near the coastal town of Malindi, where a self-proclaimed pastor was involved in ordering his followers to starve themselves to death. The situation now demands a swift, transparent investigation to bring accountability and justice for the victims.
