Four people have died after a six-storey building which was being refurbished partially collapsed in the centre of the Spanish capital, Madrid.
The city's mayor, Jose Luis Martinez-Almeida, stated that the bodies of the last two victims were recovered on Wednesday morning, roughly 15 hours after several floors at the property on Hileras Street gave way.
Reports identified the victims as a 30-year-old Spanish woman managing the project, alongside three male workers from Mali, Guinea, and Ecuador, aged between 30 and 50. Three additional individuals sustained injuries.
The former office building was in the process of being converted into a hotel. Local authorities have opened an investigation into the collapse.
Spanish emergency services deployed several teams equipped with drones and sniffer dogs to search for those who were reported missing following the incident.
Two of the victims were located on Tuesday night, with ongoing efforts to locate others at the site.
In a heartfelt message on social media, Martinez-Almeida expressed condolences, stating, All our love and support go to their families, friends, and colleagues in this very difficult time. A construction worker present during the collapse recounted how he was pumping concrete into the building's lower floors when he noticed a large cloud of dust and fled the scene.
Notably, the building's façade remained intact, despite the significant internal collapse. According to the developer Rehbilita's website, the structure was undergoing comprehensive renovations aimed at transforming it into a four-star hotel.
