Saudi Airways Face Renewed Houthi Attack as Yemen Conflict Escalates
King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh was evacuated after a loud explosion shook the terminal on Saturday, according to Reuters and other international outlets. More than a dozen ambulances streamed into the airfield, responding to reports of injuries.
The incident comes just a day after Iranian‑backed Houthi rebels claimed responsibility for two previous attacks that killed three Saudi nationals, including a pilot, and left another three dead in separate strikes on October 6 and 7.
Houthi officials blame Saudi support for Yemen’s government forces and accuse the kingdom of maintaining a blockade that fuels the civil war. Their campaign has expanded to missile and drone strikes against Saudi airports, oil installations, and shipping lanes in the Red Sea.
The Houthis’ seizure of the Yemeni port of Mokha, situated at the narrowing of the Bab al‑Mandab Strait, poses a strategic threat to global maritime traffic that traverses the Red Sea to the Suez Canal. Yemeni pro‑government forces claim to have secured the southern flank of the strait, but skirmishes continue.
Saudi Arabia’s coalition, formed in 2015 with the help of Arab allies, has fought to halt Houthi expansion. A temporary cease‑fire brokered in 2022 collapsed in July, leading to the current surge in hostilities. The latest burst of violence underscores the fragility of the truce and the growing risk to international air and sea routes.
