Purdue Pharma, the maker of OxyContin, is facing a $225 million forfeiture as part of a settlement with the Justice Department regarding its role in the opioid epidemic. This settlement, approved in 2020, also includes up to $7 billion from the Sackler family over 15 years to aid in combating the crisis. Moreover, victims and families affected by opioid overdoses continue to push for more accountability from individual members of the Sackler family, arguing that financial settlements alone do not equate to justice. Recent years have seen a surge in pressures from these advocacy groups, who demand criminal charges against those responsible for the devastating impact of OxyContin.
