The creators of South Park, the long‑running animated comedy, have announced that its new season will be called South America, a clear play on President Donald Trump’s recent attempts to rename natural features.
"Inspired by the bravery and patriotism of Apple and Google, we are changing the name of South Park to SOUTH AMERICA," the duo Matt Stone and Trey Parker wrote in a statement.
Trump’s August executive order renamed Lake Ontario as Lake America, and last year he declared the Gulf of Mexico as Gulf of America.
The announcement comes after the show won an Emmy for Outstanding Animated Program on Sunday, marking a rare prestige boost for the series.
It is not yet known whether the new name will be kept permanently or if the show will revert to South Park later in the series.
Social media posts featured a photo of the South Park sign, with the word “Park” replaced by “America.”
In the same post the creators thanked their parent company Paramount – referred to humorously as a Skydance Capitulation.
Paramount Skydance is the show’s parent company and, after the Trump administration approved a $111 bn merger with Warner Bros Discovery, the deal was paused until June 2027 because of state‑level antitrust concerns.
Just before the announcement, Trump released an AI‑generated video superimposing the word “America” over “Mexico” on a welcome sign.
In August, during heightened US‑Canada trade tensions, Trump ordered the name of Lake Ontario to be changed to Lake America, an action mirrored by Apple and Google Maps for US users.
Mexico protested Trump’s declared renaming of the Gulf of Mexico as Gulf of America, arguing that one country cannot rename a shared international body of water.
Since its debut in 1997, South Park has mocked Trump during his two terms, drawing criticism from the White House and MAGA supporters. The White House, in episode 27 of season 27, called the series “fourth‑rate” and admonished its “unspired” content aimed at gaining attention.
After the recent Emmy win, the show posted a fictionalised Donald Trump image with the text “You finally got your Emmy.”
The new South America season will premiere on 16 September.
The announcement comes after South Park won an Emmy for Outstanding Animated Program.
