PROVIDENCE, R.I. — The investigation into the tragic shooting at Brown University continues as officials request assistance from the public. A gunman opened fire on Saturday, killing two students and injuring nine others, leaving the community shaken.
Authorities have released additional video footage in hopes of identifying the perpetrator but have not made significant progress in determining his identity. Descriptions of the suspect suggest he is stocky and stands around 5 feet, 8 inches tall, but the footage predominantly shows him with his face obscured.
Law enforcement agencies have received approximately 200 tips and are actively canvassing areas around Providence for any further evidence. We’re looking for a moment that is shorter than someone taking a breath, stated Providence police chief Col. Oscar Perez.
Brown University President Christina Paxson noted the campus is equipped with 1,200 surveillance cameras; however, none clearly captured the shooter inside the engineering building where the incident occurred. As the investigation unfolds, questions about the shooter’s motives linger, with the community expressing a mix of fear and resilience.
This shooting has reignited discussions about campus safety protocols, prompting increased police presence in schools and the cancellation of after-school activities in the district. Many in Providence are reflecting on the need for genuine solutions to gun violence, with students and parents emphasizing that improved security measures alone cannot address the root issues.
As the community mourns the loss of beloved students, vigils and services are being held to honor their lives. Victims Ella Cook and Mukhammad Aziz Umurzokov are being remembered not just for their scholarly pursuits but for the impact they had on their loved ones.
