In brief
Paris St Germain’s season‑opening game against Lyon has been postponed by 24 hours to Monday for the 26 October edition of the French capital’s weekend protests. Police deemed the original Sunday slot unsafe following a nationwide surge in demonstrations against economic grievances. The LFP shifted the fixture to 20:30 to accommodate a heightened security operation while the city also hosts an NFL match that requires extensive policing. This rescheduling occurs on the same day as the Ballon d’Or ceremony in London and further disrupts the already tight Ligue 1 timetable.
The Ligue 1 fixture between Paris St Germain and Lyon has been pushed back by 24 hours to Monday, 26 October, as Paris prepares for another wave of protests.
Originally set to kick off at 19:45 GMT on Sunday, the match will now begin at 20:30 on Monday on the Parc des Princes. The Ligue de Football Professionnel announced the change after French police prevented the game from taking place on its scheduled date, citing security concerns tied to the large demonstrations expected around the city.
Paris is hosting a major protest rally on Saturday. Over 550,000 people marched last week to demand lower fuel prices, improved education standards and a lower cost of living following a wave of student strikes. The protests, backed by unions and student groups, were marred by violent incidents, looting and property damage in several major cities.
The security situation is further complicated by the NFL match between the Pittsburgh Steelers and New Orleans Saints at the Stade de France, which will coincide with the protests near Place de la Bastille. French authorities have relocated Toulouse’s match against Troyes from Saturday to Sunday to alleviate policing pressures.
Despite the rescheduling, PSG is still in second place after seven matches while Lyon tops the table with 14 points. The match date now also clashes with the Ballon d’Or ceremony in London, where injured PSG star Ousmane Dembele and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia are tied for the award.
