In a surprising turn of events, former US Olympic canoeist David "Davey" Hearn, 67, has been charged with vandalism after an incident at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool in Washington DC.
Hearn was seen reaching into the water on June 19th, 2026, shortly after a $14 million renovation of the pool’s lining. Authorities allege that he ripped a section of newly‑applied sealant, inflicting an estimated $1 000 (£750) in damage and, consequently, a felony charge of destruction of property.

Hearn’s legal team protested, describing the indictment as “out‑rageous” and calling the prosecution “arbitrary, capricious.” He maintains he only touched material that had already been damaged, insisting he did not destroy or remove any part of the pool’s coating.
