A 20‑year‑old US Marine, Devin Jacob Ballard, was arrested on charges of murder after the body of 39‑year‑old Yagi Anna was discovered in a hotel in Naha, Okinawa.

Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi condemned the act as a “brutal and heinous” robbery‑murder, urging the United States to tighten discipline among its forces stationed on the island.

The incident took place near Marine Corps Air Station Futenma, a major American base that has long been a flashpoint in U.S.–Japan security relations.

Japanese Defence Minister Shinjiro Koizumi described the event as “utterly inexcusable” and said it deepened local anxieties over U.S. troop activities.

The US Embassy in Tokyo and the Marine Corps said they were fully cooperating with Japanese authorities, while the U.S. Foreign Ministry summoned ambassador George Glass to discuss the matter.

Okinawa Governor Genta Koja called the crime evidence of insufficient discipline within the U.S. military and demanded stronger measures to prevent future incidents.
