US Marine Arrested in Okinawa Murder

A 20‑year‑old U.S. Marine, Devin Jacob Ballard, has been detained on suspicion of murder after the body of a 39‑year‑old Japanese woman was discovered in a hotel in Naha City, the capital of Okinawa Prefecture.
Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi called the case a brutal and heinous robbery‑murder and urged Washington to enforce stricter discipline on its personnel.
The Marine Corps said on social media that it is cooperating with Japanese authorities and extended condolences to the victim family.
Japanese Defence Minister Shinjiro Koizumi posted that a body was found early Saturday morning in a hotel, calling the event utterly inexcusable.
Japan summoned U.S. Ambassador George Glass to Tokyo to discuss the incident, while the Okinawa governor reiterated that repeated emergence of such incidents shows a lack of discipline among U.S. troops.
Okinawa hosts several U.S. military bases and the local government has long demanded action to prevent similar incidents.
The case underscores tensions in the U.S.-Japan security partnership and raises questions about how discipline and accountability are managed on overseas bases.
