CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — A judge in North Carolina has ordered Oscar Solarzano, a Honduran man, to be held without bond related to a stabbing incident on a Charlotte commuter train, drawing widespread attention and comments from political figures.
The incident occurred when Solarzano allegedly stabbed 24-year-old Kenyon Kareem Dobie during a dispute on the Blue Line transit system. Solarzano appeared in court via video link, where charges against him, including attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon, were read.
Details revealed during the proceedings indicated that Solarzano, also known by his other name, Oscar Gerardo Solorzano-Garcia, had been banned from the transit system previously for unspecified reasons and was listed as residing in a homeless shelter.
The stabbing marks the second serious incident on Charlotte's transit system within a short period, following the fatal stabbing of a Ukrainian refugee a few months prior. Political reactions have been swift, particularly from former President Donald Trump, who commented on the incident, stating it highlighted concerns about crime in Democratic-led cities.
Solarzano has been deported twice and has a documented history of prior criminal offenses, including robbery. The Department of Homeland Security has placed a detainer on him, emphasizing ongoing immigration enforcement. Charlotte leaders, including Mayor Vi Lyles, express their commitment to public safety, emphasizing investments in transit security following recent violent incidents.
Dobie, speaking from his hospital bed, reflected on his actions that led to the confrontation, asserting he felt compelled to defend an elderly woman from Solarzano's aggressive behavior. Despite his injuries, he expressed a sense of relief that the situation had not escalated further, categorically stating his desire to defend vulnerable individuals.
As discussions about the intersection of immigration policy and public safety continue, local officials and law enforcement reiterate their commitment to maintaining a secure transit environment for all residents.
