There are no plans for U.S. President Donald Trump to meet Russia's Vladimir Putin in the immediate future, a White House official has stated.
Last Thursday Trump mentioned that he and the Russian president would hold talks in Budapest within two weeks regarding the war in Ukraine.
A preparatory meeting between U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov was scheduled for this week. However, the White House announced that the two officials had a productive call, making the in-person meeting unnecessary.
The White House did not disclose further reasons for postponing the talks.
On Monday, Trump expressed support for freezing the conflict in Ukraine along the current frontline. He remarked, Let it be cut the way it is, referring to the contested region of Donbas in eastern Ukraine.
Despite this, Russia has consistently resisted calls for a freeze on the current front line, with Lavrov asserting that Moscow is interested only in a long-term, sustainable peace, suggesting that freezing the frontline would merely lead to a temporary ceasefire.
