New Monkey Species Discovered in Congo’s Lomami National Park
\A primate with pinkish‑orange lips and a black face has been formally named a new species after ten years of elusive sightings.
\The animal lives high in the forest canopy of Lomami National Park, in the Democratic Republic of Congo’s central‑eastern region.
\Conservationists first reported the monkey in 2008, but it wasn’t until a second sighting a decade later that an international research team travelled to the park to confirm its existence and take detailed photographs.
\Franciszek Laurenson, Africa director at the Frankfurt Zoological Society, said the discovery is “amazing” and highlighted that “there is still a lot out there in the natural world that needs to be explored.”
\The finding underscores how much biodiversity remains undocumented, especially in dense tropical forests that are difficult to study.
