On a Monday night, the MV Barima, carrying 116 passengers, capsized off the coast of Guyana near Iron Punt while en route from Georgetown to Port Kaituma, creating an urgent search and rescue operation.
Authorities received a distress call at 23:01 local time (03:01 GMT‑1), prompting immediate mobilization of state and private boats under the direction of Public Works Minister Juan Edghill.
So far, eight passengers have been rescued, but the overall status of the incident remains unknown and there are doubts whether all passengers can be recovered.
The vessel, constructed in 1939, measures 40 metres (131 feet) in length and was equipped with 250 life jackets, two rigid lifeboats, and six inflatable life‑rafts.
Prime Minister Mark Phillips is reported to be overseeing the government response to the tragedy.
