In brief
Babcock Ranch, designed to endure hurricane-force conditions, provided refuge to over 2,000 evacuees during Hurricane Milton, demonstrating its effectiveness in mitigating storm damage. This architecturally fortified community could offer a pathway toward more resilient urban planning.
In a striking display of resilience amid Hurricane Milton’s onslaught last Wednesday, Babcock Ranch, located on Florida's west coast, emerged as a beacon of hope and safety for over 2,000 evacuees. The community, akin in size to Manhattan and established in 2018, was designed specifically to withstand frequent and severe climate-driven storms. Its infrastructure, capable of enduring winds surpassing 150 miles per hour, proved its effectiveness once more as evacuees, notably from nearby Fort Myers, found sanctuary within its fortified boundaries. The influx of evacuees was immediate upon Governor DeSantis' announcement. Babcock Ranch's emergency shelters, including a local K-12 school and a vast sports facility, quickly filled as residents from areas under mandatory evacuation converged on this hub of safety. Syd Kitson, the community’s co-founder, noted the lifesaving impact of the community’s preparedness: "It saved a lot of lives in some really dangerous areas."Babcock Ranch benefits from more than just strong buildings. Its 150-megawatt solar farms and underground power lines ensure a consistent electricity supply, even amidst major storms. Post-hurricane evaluations revealed minimal damage - a few downed trees and traffic lights - but notably, the power remained uninterrupted. Meanwhile, its preserved wetlands absorbed excess water, preventing flooding.Such attributes highlight Babcock Ranch as a potential template for future urban development in hurricane-prone regions. Kitson underscores the importance of such foresight, emphasizing, “Mother Nature is going to rule every time. But what we try to do is mitigate as much of that risk as possible and make our community as resilient as we can.” In this era of increasing climate volatility, Babcock Ranch stands out not just as a place of refuge, but as a model of sustainable and resilient urban planning.
