Israel flight plunged 5,200 metres after alleged pilot assault

Passengers on Etihad Airways flight FZ1073, destined for Israel, counted a sudden, 17,000‑foot drop that took less than two minutes to reach the ground. The incident reportedly began after a pilot allegedly stabbed his co‑pilot, leaving the aircraft in an uncontrolled descent.

A survivor, Almog Itali, described the experience as “like a rollercoaster”. He stated that the remaining crew members, together with two other pilots seated at the rear, wrestled control of the jet and guided it safely to a diversion landing in Saudi Arabia. Passengers claimed they were involved in stabilising the plane during the uncontrolled dive.

The event has prompted urgent investigations into cockpit security protocols and the safety of passengers during onboard emergencies. Authorities in both Israel and Saudi Arabia are expected to examine the incident’s details, while airline officials review measures to prevent similar occurrences.
