Authorities are actively searching for Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of 'Today' show host Savannah Guthrie, who was reportedly taken from her home in Tucson, Arizona, against her will over the weekend.
The Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos has raised concerns about Nancy's health, stating that her condition is critical due to not having access to her medication. In a press conference held on Tuesday, he called for public assistance, despite revealing limited details about the ongoing investigation.
As efforts continue, the sheriff confirmed that investigators found signs of forced entry at Nancy's residence, alongside specific evidence indicating a possible nighttime abduction. No suspects or persons of interest have been identified at this stage, according to the sheriff's department.
Nancy Guthrie was last seen Saturday evening at her home nestled in the Catalina Foothills. Her disappearance was reported the following day when church members noted her absence, prompting family members to search her residence and subsequently contact law enforcement.
Initially, search teams employed drones and dogs to locate Nancy, but as of Monday, authorities have shifted focus from searching to treating the scene as a potential crime site.
Several personal belongings, including Nancy's cellphone, wallet, and car, remained at her home, further raising alarm. Investigators are currently reviewing surveillance video from the surrounding neighborhood and examining local cellphone tower data.
As for the motive behind her disappearance, authorities do not believe that the incident stems from robbery or kidnapping-for-ransom plot. However, media outlets have reported receiving ransom notes, which have been forwarded to investigators.
Meanwhile, Savannah Guthrie has been in Arizona during this distressing time and voiced her concerns on social media, urging the public to join her in prayers for her mother's safe return. Savannah grew up in Tucson and has credited her mother with holding the family together after the death of her father when she was just 16.
As the investigation continues, officials maintain hope that Nancy will be found safe.
