WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) — William Stevenson, 77, the former husband of first lady Jill Biden, has been charged with the murder of his wife, Linda Stevenson, who was found unresponsive at their home in late December 2023. Authorities announced his arrest and first-degree murder charges following a weekslong investigation. Stevenson, who was married to Jill Biden from 1970 to 1975, remains in jail after failing to post a $500,000 bail.
Linda Stevenson, 64, was discovered by police on December 28 after they responded to reports of a domestic dispute. Described in her obituary as a family-oriented individual and a Philadelphia Eagles fan, she operated a bookkeeping business but her obituary did not mention her husband.
The investigation, conducted by detectives in the Delaware Department of Justice, culminated in a grand jury indictment that led to Stevenson’s arrest on Monday. It has not yet been confirmed if he has retained legal counsel. Stevenson is known for founding the renowned music venue Stone Balloon in Newark during the 1970s.
In a 2024 interview with Newsmax, Stevenson made critical remarks about Jill Biden, characterizing their divorce as contentious and labeling her as 'bitter' and 'nasty.' Following her marriage to Stevenson, Jill Biden married U.S. Senator Joe Biden in 1977, who later became the U.S. President from January 2021 to January 2025.}
