Hawaii's storm has already cost some $1 billion (£752m) in damages, officials say, after two consecutive storms dropped as much as 50in (127cm) of rain on parts of the state and murky brown flood waters submerged some sections of the island of Oahu.
More than 230 people had to be rescued, Governor Josh Green told Hawaii News Now on Sunday, but officials have not recorded any fatalities to date. There were camps that had to be rescued, people were trapped by the water, said Green. The coast guard also pulled people off of debris out in the ocean.
He stated that the White House is in contact with his office and described officials in Washington as very supportive. The flooding in the state has been noted as the worst since 2004.
During Sunday morning local time, some evacuation and flash flood warnings on Oahu were lifted, but other parts of the state remained under threat. Part of the Kuihelani Highway on Maui was temporarily closed due to fast moving water, though it reopened by Sunday.
Other roadways on Maui experienced rockfalls. Green cautioned that the full scope of the damages has yet to be assessed and urged residents to remain careful on the roads. There's still major flooding all over the place, do not drive through deep water, he said.
Rainfall estimates for Maui county predict another 8 to 10 inches in the coming days. He also forewarned against boating between islands as further storms roll through.
The Hawaii National Guard continues to monitor water levels at the 120-year-old Wahiawa dam due to earlier fears it might overflow, prompting evacuations.
Mikey, a resident of Wahiawa, reported waking to floodwaters late Saturday night, which surged into his home, destroying his possessions. Actor Jason Momoa shared similar concerns, stating his family had to evacuate their home on the North Shore and sent support to others affected by the storms.
