Family Captures Their Escape Amid Colombia’s Deadliest Earthquake
A Colombian mother, mother-of-four Liliana Pérez Ocampo, and her family recorded the frantic moment they fled their home on the morning of Monday’s 7.4‑magnitude quake. The video shows them hurriedly packing belongings and sprinting out of a shaky house before the tremor turned into a violent all‑out earthquake.
The family’s footage reveals that, initially, the shaking seems mild – a tremor they had experienced many times before – but as 30 seconds passed the room vibrated violently, prompting them to leave immediately. Everyone in the family, including two preschoolers who were at school, escaped unharmed.
Despite widespread damage in this region, the family’s story stresses that “in the end, material things can be replaced, but the most important thing is life.” They consider themselves fortunate to have survived the strike.
The Colombia Geological Service confirmed that the quake was the strongest felt there in the twenty‑first‑century, claiming at least 132 lives.
