In brief
In a tragic incident on Saturday in Suleja, Niger state, a fuel tanker explosion resulted in the catastrophic loss of 77 lives. The disaster occurred just moments after the tanker overturned and spilled its fuel, drawing a crowd that ultimately led to the explosion. Alongside the fatalities, 25 others suffered injuries, including rescue workers who rushed to the scene. This unfortunate event underlines the recurring issue of fuel-related accidents in Nigeria, a problem exacerbated by deteriorating road conditions and poorly maintained vehicles.
Local authorities reported that the incident occurred when the tanker, which had turned over, began leaking fuel. Many people, seeking a desperate means of survival amidst rising fuel prices—an increase of over 400% in the last 18 months due to government policy changes—gathered to collect fuel from the site. As they filled their containers, the tanker ignited, creating chaos and devastation. The aftermath has drawn profound concern, especially since Nigeria has seen a series of similar tragedies recently. Only two weeks prior, another fuel tanker exploded following a crash in Delta state, claiming at least five lives. Furthermore, in October, an explosion caused by individuals collecting leaking petrol resulted in 153 fatalities. Health officials have reported that the injured from Saturday's explosion are receiving treatment in local hospitals. The government maintains that its recent economic policies, including the removal of longstanding fuel subsidies touted as necessary for strengthening the economy, are meant to foster long-term growth despite the immediate hardships faced by millions.
