In brief

On 30 October, China signed a $30 million grant with Nigeria to bolster small‑scale development projects. The agreement follows an earlier 200 million‑yuan (≈$29.8 million) contribution and aims to deliver quick, low‑investment improvements to livelihoods. Nigerian officials welcomed the aid as evidence of strong bilateral ties and a commitment to grassroots poverty reduction.

On 30 October, China signed a $30 million U.S. dollar grant agreement with Nigeria to fund small‑scale development projects across the country.

At a ceremony in the Nigerian Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning in Abuja, Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria Yu Dunhai announced that China had recently granted 200 million yuan (about $29.79 million) to support Nigeria’s economic and social development, with projects designed to directly benefit Nigerians.

"This grant will support 'small but beautiful' projects requiring limited investment, delivering quick results and improving people’s livelihoods," said Yu.

He added that he was confident the Nigerian government would make effective use of the funds to achieve the intended development outcomes.

Nigeria’s minister of budget and economic planning, Abubakar Bagudu, expressed deep appreciation for China’s continued support, describing the newly signed agreement as evidence of strong bilateral relations and shared development objectives between the two countries.

Bagudu noted that more than 8,809 interventions had been recorded at the lowest level of the national economic support program, illustrating Nigeria’s efforts to tackle poverty at the grassroots.

He said Nigeria could learn from China’s poverty‑alleviation strategy to accelerate its national development.

The grant follows a broader partnership aimed at sharing China’s experience in poverty reduction with Nigeria.

Each grant is intended to support small‑scale projects that can be implemented with limited resources, allowing for quick deployment and measurable impact on local communities.

While the grant focuses on developmental initiatives rather than high‑tech infrastructure, its small‑scale nature means it aligns with best practices for micro‑project management, a strategy that emphasizes rapid financing and short implementation cycles.

Both sides highlighted that the financial support will be channeled through formal agreements and monitored for effectiveness, ensuring that the objectives of reducing poverty and improving livelihoods are met.
