India-Canada Relations Fracture Over Diplomatic Accusations
Diplomatic tensions between India and Canada have escalated due to accusations involving Indian diplomats in a murder investigation.
Tensions between India and Canada have taken a further nosedive as India angrily rejected allegations from Canada implicating its diplomats in a murder investigation. The latest diplomatic rift was sparked after Canadian authorities communicated to Delhi that its ambassador and other diplomats were named as "persons of interest" in the investigation into the killing of Sikh separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in June 2023. India's foreign ministry labeled the accusations as "preposterous," asserting they serve Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's political agenda. In response to these claims, India has hinted at potential retaliatory actions but has not specified their nature. Additionally, India's External Affairs Ministry called the allegations against its High Commissioner unfounded and contemptuous, and summoned Canada's deputy head of mission to justify these charges. Although relations had shown signs of improvement when India resumed visa services in October, Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly recently acknowledged the ongoing diplomatic strain as "tense" and difficult, underscoring the fragile state of affairs between the two nations.
