Australian police have shot and killed Dezi Freeman after the double-murderer spent seven months on the run. Freeman, identified as a well-known conspiracy theorist, gunned down two police officers on his property in the small Victorian town of Porepunkah last August, before fleeing into dense bushland and evading extensive searches.
On Monday morning, police confronted a man believed to be Freeman during a standoff at a rural property in northeast Victoria. Chief Commissioner Mike Bush confirmed that the man, believed to be 56, was shot dead following attempts to persuade him to surrender.
Today an evil man is dead, said Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan. The police surrounded a building on the property around 5:30 AM local time and after hours of negotiation, a man thought to be Freeman emerged wrapped in a blanket and was shot dead, reportedly while armed with a firearm potentially taken from one of the officers he killed.
No officers were injured during the operation, which will be investigated due to the nature of the shooting. Freeman was the subject of a massive manhunt after fatally shooting officers Neal Thompson and Vadim de Waart during an investigation into sex offenses. Their families were informed of Freeman's death before the public announcement.
Freeman, whose real name was Desmond Filby, had a history of conflict with authorities and was known for his extreme beliefs, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic, which intensified his anti-government sentiments. His death concluded a manhunt that raised significant concerns about the rise of anti-government groups in Australia. Law enforcement is now investigating any potential assistance he may have received while evading capture.
