In brief
In early February 2023, US singer Chris Brown struck a music producer on the dance floor in London’s Tape nightclub with a glass tequila bottle, causing head injuries that required hospital treatment. He and his accomplice, vocal coach and rapper Omololu Akinlolu, pleaded guilty to affray, leading to an eight‑month prison sentence for Brown and four months for Akinlolu, both suspended for a year. Judge Tony Baumgartner highlighted the dangerous nature of the offence and the risk it posed to others in the cramped venue. Despite the seriousness, the judge ruled a custodial sentence was not warranted, giving the defendants a chance to avoid prison provided they refrain from further offences.
The Incident
In the early hours of 19 February 2023, U.S. R&B star Chris Brown was photographed in the intimate setting of London’s private members’ club Tape, which is located in the upscale Mayfair district. Brown is alleged to have approached a music producer, Abraham "Abe" Diaw, on the dance floor around 03:00 and struck him twice in the head with a glass tequila bottle, a device described by the prosecution as a “heavy square‑shaped tequila bottle.” The victim sustained head injuries that required treatment at St Mary’s Hospital. CCTV footage, shown in court, captured Brown hitting the victim four times with the bottle, two of those strikes landing on the head, and a subsequent blow to the shoulder.
Court Proceedings
Brown and Akinlolu entered guilty pleas for affray at Southwark Crown Court in July. Both men were ordered to pay £1,500 in court costs. Brown received an eight‑month prison sentence, suspended for 12 months, while Akinlolu was sentenced to four months, also suspended for a year. The judge explained that the sentence would take effect only if either offender reoffended during the 12‑month suspension period.
Judge’s Rationale
Judge Tony Baumgartner described the assault as “plainly dangerous” and “intense” because the use of a glass bottle in that manner posed a high risk of serious injury. He stressed that violence in a crowded nightclub threatens not just the immediate victim but also those nearby, and that the conduct was “particularly dangerous.” While the judge noted Brown’s reduced risk of future offense and his compliance with bail conditions, he reiterated that fame does not excuse criminal behaviour and that law applies equally to all.
Public Reaction
Following the sentencing, Brown returned to the courtroom with Akinlolu, clasping hands before walking out amid cheers. In a brief Instagram story posted from his car, Brown looked out a window, turned to the camera and gave a thumbs‑up. Critics and co‑workers alike called the incident “ugly and unattractive,” and the American media portrayed his actions as a stark contrast to his public image as a “dedicated and loving father.”
