In brief
Silver Rail Elementary in Bend, Oregon, was rocked by a sixteen‑year‑old former student’s shooting last month. The assailant was stopped by Kaylub Giamanco, a 36‑year‑old father who stepped into the classroom with a handgun. Giamanco now confesses a heavy sorrow for the children who still died, as he can hear their pleas in his mind. Authorities highlight the bravery of a teacher who helped him get inside, while the community mourns the loss of four teachers. The incident raises fresh concerns on school safety and the emotional toll on everyday heroes.
Three schoolchildren and a teacher were killed in the school shooting that shook Bend, Oregon, on October 15.
A 16‑year‑old former pupil, Griffin J. John II, entered Silver Rail Elementary with a shotgun and opened fire, killing a five‑year‑old boy, an eight‑year‑old boy and an eleven‑year‑old boy, as well as a young teacher. The shooter was then taken down by a 36‑year‑old father, Kaylub Giamanco, who intervened with a handgun found in his car.
In an interview with Oregon Public Broadcasting, Giamanco shared the sting of his actions and said, “I want to apologise for not saving their babies.” He described crawling through a shattered window to reach a locked classroom, where a teacher who had fought the attacker had just taken her shotgun. Giamanco says the teacher “almost certainly helped prevent more bloodshed,” and he could hear children pleading for their lives.
“I told myself this is probably the last thing that I’ll ever do,” Giamanco told the broadcaster. He admits that the memory now haunts him, saying, “I relive it, I see faces, I hear voices, I hear screams.”
Oregon Governor Tina Kotek praised Giamanco’s intervention while acknowledging its emotional cost, saying, “Your actions carry a heavy emotional burden, and I just want you to know that my thoughts are with you as well.”
Police identified Griffin J. John II as the shooter, a former special‑education student whose motive remains under investigation. A teacher named Becky Drury was injured when the attacker tried to shut the classroom door, and two other boys were wounded but remain unnamed at their families’ request.
The community has come together with vigils and memorials outside Silver Rail Elementary. In remembrance of the victims, the family statement urges privacy for the children’s parents and their father has pledged to process his trauma with professional help.
