In brief

China has escalated its trade tensions with the U.S. by initiating an export ban on critical minerals essential for advanced technologies, including gallium and germanium. This decision follows the U.S. government's recent restrictions on technology sales to China, illustrating the intensifying rivalry in the global tech arena.

In a significant escalation of trade tensions, China announced on Tuesday it will ban the export of certain critical minerals to the United States, underscoring the escalating tech war between the two global superpowers. This announcement comes on the heels of the Biden administration's latest restrictions aimed at limiting China's access to advanced American technology.Effective immediately, the ban targets materials such as gallium, germanium, and antimony, citing national security concerns related to their potential military applications. Additionally, the export of graphite will now undergo stricter scrutiny. With almost the entire global supply of these essential minerals produced in China, this move signifies a tightening of Beijing's grip on these resources. In October, China had already begun implementing measures requiring exporters to account for how these rare minerals would be utilized within Western supply chains, displaying a strategic response to U.S. policies. The Biden administration's recent actions included prohibiting specific types of semiconductor chips and machinery sales to China while adding more than 100 Chinese companies to a trade restriction list, reflecting a concerted effort to curb China's technological advancement. The Chinese government condemned the U.S. measures, labeling them "illegal" and stating they destabilize international trade and disrupt global supply chains, ultimately harming the interests of all countries involved. This latest development marks the third significant action taken by the Biden administration in a bid to counter China's progression in cutting-edge technologies, highlighting the increasing complexities of global economic relations.
