GRAND BLANC, Mich. (AP) — A tragic shooting occurred on Sunday at a Mormon church in Grand Blanc, Michigan, claiming one life and injuring nine others, with the suspect also dead. The incident took place at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, located about 50 miles north of Detroit, as confirmed by Grand Blanc Township Police Chief William Renye. In addition to the violence, the church itself was also set ablaze during the altercation.

Police have assured the public that there is no ongoing threat, although details regarding the conditions of the surviving victims have yet to be released. The church is situated near residential neighborhoods and close to a Jehovah’s Witness congregation in a community of around 8,000 residents, just outside Flint.

In a statement, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer expressed her sorrow for the Grand Blanc community: 'Violence anywhere, especially in a place of worship, is unacceptable.' This shooting comes at a particularly poignant time, occurring just after the death of Russell M. Nelson, the 101-year-old president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Dallin H. Oaks is expected to succeed him as the leader of the faith, commonly referred to as the Mormon church, following established church protocols.
