The iconic musician feels optimistic about his health two months after revealing his condition, Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus.
Billy Joel has provided an encouraging update regarding his health, two months after he publicly revealed his diagnosis of Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH), a rare brain condition that affects fluid buildup in the brain. During an appearance on Bill Maher's Club Random podcast, the renowned singer-songwriter shared that while he continues to manage balance issues related to his condition, he feels "good" overall.
Describing NPH, Joel acknowledged that the term "brain disorder" has negative connotations, but he emphasized that his overall well-being is better than it might sound. He referred to the ongoing management of his health, stating, "It’s still being worked on." Earlier in May, Joel had to cancel several concert dates after doctors informed him that his condition had been worsened by the physical exertion required during performances.
Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus is a relatively uncommon condition, particularly affecting individuals over 60. The condition can lead to impairments in mobility, vision, and hearing due to fluid accumulation in the brain. Following his diagnosis, Joel committed to specific physical therapy aimed at recovery, ensuring his health remained a priority.
The singer's wife, Alexis Joel, publicly expressed gratitude for the effective care and rapid diagnosis they received, expressing hope for his recovery. In the light of his diagnosis, Joel decided to cancel 17 concert performances scheduled in North America and Europe for 2025 and 2026, including highly anticipated shows at venues like Murrayfield in Edinburgh and Anfield in Liverpool.
Known for timeless hits such as "Uptown Girl" and "Piano Man," Joel had maintained a consistent touring schedule prior to his health issues. His decade-long residency at New York’s Madison Square Garden concluded last year, culminating in a memorable performance before he faced health challenges. As he shared his journey, Joel shows resilience and a positive outlook towards his rehabilitation.
