The legendary musician expresses positivity as he navigates health challenges.
In a recent appearance on Bill Maher's Club Random podcast, Billy Joel shared his feelings two months after revealing his diagnosis of Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH), a rare brain disorder. The five-time Grammy-award-winning musician reported that although he is still facing balance issues related to the condition, he generally feels “good” despite the serious nature of the diagnosis.
"I feel good," said Joel. "They keep referring to what I have as a brain disorder, so it sounds a lot worse than what I’m feeling." The 76-year-old entertainer had to cancel multiple concert dates in May, as his doctors indicated that performing had worsened his condition.
NPH, which primarily affects individuals over the age of 60, involves an accumulation of cerebral fluid in the brain, potentially leading to complications in mobility, vision, and hearing. In a statement on his Instagram, Joel mentioned he was undergoing specific physical therapy measures to manage his health, affirming his dedication to recovery. His wife, Alexis Joel, expressed gratitude for the timely medical attention received and remained hopeful for a positive outcome.
As a result of his condition, he has postponed 17 performances planned for North America and Europe between 2025 and 2026, including significant shows at Murrayfield in Edinburgh and Anfield in Liverpool. Joel, famed for classic hits like “Piano Man” and “Uptown Girl,” has been an active performer, wrapping up his record-breaking residency at Madison Square Garden just last year. His last performance took place in February 2025, where he suffered a fall on stage, subsequently leading to the suspension of his tour due to medical advisement.
