Chris Brown Declares Not Guilty in Assault Case Ahead of Trial
US R&B star Chris Brown pleads not guilty to multiple assault charges linked to a 2023 nightclub incident in London, setting the stage for a court trial in 2026.
Chris Brown arrived at Southwark Crown Court on Friday morning, clad in a brown suit and dark-rimmed glasses, and waved to his supporters present in the gallery. The 36-year-old singer faces two charges: causing actual bodily harm to music producer Abraham Diaw and possessing an offensive weapon, specifically a tequila bottle. Last month, these charges were added to a more serious accusation of attempting to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH), to which Brown has also entered a not guilty plea.
Prosecutors allege that Brown attacked Diaw unprovoked while he was at the bar in Soho’s Tape nightclub on February 19, 2023. This incident led to Brown's arrest at the Lowry Hotel in Salford, Greater Manchester in May, shortly before his planned European tour. He was held in custody for nearly a week before being released after paying a £5 million security fee, a condition imposed to ensure his presence in court.
While awaiting trial, Brown is required to reside in the UK and surrender his passport to the police. However, arrangements have been put in place for him to travel for his Breezy Bowl XX world tour, which kicked off in Amsterdam on June 8 and spans several concert dates across Europe, culminating recently in Paris.
Brown is a celebrated figure in the US R&B scene with two Grammy Awards and numerous chart-topping hits, including "Turn Up The Music," "Freaky Friday," and "With You." His co-defendant in the case, 39-year-old Omololu Akinlolu, also known as HoodyBaby, has pleaded not guilty to similar charges of causing actual bodily harm and attempted grievous bodily harm.
