North Korea Pledges Unconditional Support for Russia's Actions in Ukraine
In a meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, Kim Jong Un reaffirms North Korea's loyalty to Russia during the ongoing Ukraine conflict.
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has publicly declared his unwavering support for Russia's military actions in Ukraine during his meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. According to statements released by North Korean state media, Kim conveyed that Pyongyang stands robustly behind "all the measures taken by the Russian leadership" in addressing what they term the "root cause of the Ukrainian crisis".
Recent reports suggest that North Korea has dispatched approximately 11,000 troops to assist Russia in the Ukraine conflict over the past year, coinciding with Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine that began in February 2022.
During the meeting in Wonsan, which was described by North Korean media as imbued with "warm comradely trust," Kim expressed confidence that the Russian military would achieve victory in defending the nation's dignity and interests. Alongside Lavrov, Kim participated in a handshake and warm embrace, which Russia's foreign ministry highlighted in a video shared on Telegram.
Lavrov also took the opportunity to thank North Korean forces for their contributions during the conflict in discussions with his counterpart, Choe Son Hui. This rapprochement comes at a time when U.S. military support for Ukraine is being reactivated, particularly with the provision of Patriot air defense systems, as discussed by President Donald Trump.
North Korea's support has included not only military personnel but also an offer of thousands of workers to aid in the reconstruction of Russia’s war-affected Kursk region, as recently indicated by Moscow's security chief.
These developments underline the deepening ties between North Korea and Russia, particularly in the context of mutual agreements made during Kim's prior discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin including a commitment to back each other against perceived aggression.
