Europe's Liberty Under Threat: Macron's Urgent Call for Defence Reinforcement
French President Emmanuel Macron emphasizes the critical need for heightened defense spending in response to the mounting geopolitical dangers facing Europe today.
In a stark warning regarding Europe's security landscape, French President Emmanuel Macron stated that the continent is facing its most significant threat since World War II. Speaking to armed forces in Paris, Macron described the current geopolitical climate as "pivotal," necessitating an urgent reassessment of military readiness and spending.
Macron proposed an increase in France's defense budget, advocating for a €3.5 billion rise next year, followed by an additional €3 billion by 2027. This is a part of a strategic initiative that aims to double the military budget from €32 billion in 2017 to €64 billion by 2027 — a timeline accelerated by three years. These proposals are expected to go through the French government’s approval process.
In his speech, which coincided with the eve of Bastille Day, Macron underscored the realities of contemporary conflict and the resurgence of nuclear capabilities, as well as the implications of international confrontations from the U.S. involvement in Iran to the tensions between India and Pakistan. He remarked on what he termed the "imperialist policies" and "annexing powers," particularly in light of Russia's ongoing invasion of Ukraine, which began in February 2022.
Macron declared, "To be free in this world, you must be feared. To be feared, you must be powerful," underscoring the imperative of a robust military stance. His comments came alongside NATO's recent commitment to ramp up defense spending to 5% of GDP from a prior target of 2%, highlighting the urgency felt within member states about collective security.
The urgency of Macron's message was echoed by the head of the French army, Thierry Burkhard, who indicated that Russia views France as a principal adversary in Europe, framing the conflict in Ukraine as a determining factor in Europe’s future standing.
French Prime Minister Francois Bayrou is set to present next year's budget, further detailing the defense funding adjustments amid escalating tensions and the shifting dynamics of international support for Ukraine.
