In a compelling speech delivered to military leaders in Paris on July 13, 2025, President Emmanuel Macron underscored the alarming state of global security, heralding a new era for French defense policy. As the nation prepares for Bastille Day, Macron's comments conveyed a stark message: "Our freedom has never been so threatened." He articulated a belief that traditional norms are crumbling, and power dynamics have shifted, necessitating European self-reliance in defense.
Macron's oratory highlighted a stark realization among European leaders—that the allegiance they once counted on from the U.S., particularly under the Trump administration, is waning.
