Humanitarian Crisis Deepens in Gaza as Israeli Fire Claims Lives of Civilians

Reports indicate at least 30 Palestinians have died while awaiting assistance in Gaza, raising concerns over humanitarian access amid ongoing violence.

The humanitarian situation in Gaza worsens as Israeli gunfire kills at least 30 individuals waiting for aid, adding to the growing death toll of over 1,000 Palestinians since late May. International warnings about famine conditions heighten as calls for increased humanitarian access intensify.

At least 30 Palestinians were killed by Israeli gunfire on Wednesday in northern Gaza while they awaited humanitarian assistance, according to a report from the Hamas-controlled civil defense agency. This tragic incident exacerbates an already dire humanitarian crisis, which has seen more than 1,000 Palestinians lose their lives while seeking food and aid since late May, as reported by the United Nations.

A spokesperson for Gaza's civil defense shared with AFP that approximately 300 individuals were also injured during the incident, prompting a response from the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF), who stated that they were "still examining" the details surrounding the gunfire. The IDF claimed they initially fired "warning shots" after a crowd gathered around aid trucks, located 3 kilometers southwest of the Zikim crossing, but asserted they were "not aware of any casualties" due to their actions.

Mohammed Abu Salmiya, the director of al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City, reported that his facility had received 35 bodies following the incident, with later reports from the hospital indicating the death toll may have risen to at least 48, as reported by the Associated Press. In a separate incident, hospital sources noted six Palestinians were also killed near a Gaza Humanitarian Foundation aid distribution center on the same morning; however, the GHF stated no casualties occurred at their sites on that day.

The IDF maintained that they had ordered a "gathering of suspects" to relocate as they posed a threat to troops, before firing warning shots "hundreds of meters" away from the distribution center and suggesting that initial casualty reports did not match their information.

According to the UN human rights office, the toll from Israeli military actions aimed at those seeking food aid in Gaza has steadily increased, with over 1,000 reported deaths since the beginning of the Israel-Hamas conflict in October 2023. Additionally, Gaza's health ministry claimed that malnutrition has claimed the lives of over 150 people since the conflict escalated, including 89 children.

Simultaneously, a coalition of UN-backed food security experts indicated that Gaza is currently facing an acute threat of famine. Despite Israel's recently announced "tactical pauses" to facilitate aid delivery, international criticism persists regarding these measures and claims, with European nations and the UN calling for a more substantial influx of humanitarian assistance.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stressed the need for a significant increase in aid, stating, "Food, water, medicine and fuel must flow in waves and without obstruction. This nightmare must end." On Thursday, US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff is set to arrive in Israel to engage on the pressing humanitarian issues in Gaza, amidst a backdrop of shifting international recognition for Palestinian statehood from countries like Canada, following France and the UK.

Reports indicate a staggering total of more than 60,000 Palestinians have died as a result of ongoing military actions in Gaza since the commencement of hostilities in October 2023. This figure includes nearly 19,000 children and nearly 10,000 women, following Israel's military campaign in response to the Hamas-led assault that resulted in approximately 1,200 deaths and took 251 hostages in southern Israel soon after fighting began.
